Dublin is the capital of the Republic of Ireland and is the political, administrative, educational, commercial, retail and cultural centre of the country.
Dublin City is governed by Dublin City Council which employs approximately 6,500 people and provides an estimated 500 services for people living, working and visiting the City. It is the largest local government authority in Ireland.
Dublin City Council is presided over by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, the first citizen of the city, an office which had existed since 1665. The day-to-day management of the local authority is vested in a full-time chief executive known as the Dublin City Manager.
